Guest Lecture

Besides lectures and tutorials, we also organize guest talks for EPYMT students.

In 2015 summer, we are going to organize the following talks:

1. Guest Lecture on 30 July 2015
TopicRandom Walks, PageRank, and Computer Science
SpeakerProf. CHAN Siu On
Department of Computer Science and Engineering, CUHK
Date30 July 2015 (Thur)
Time2:30pm - 4:00pm
VenueLT7, Lee Shau Kee Building (LSK), The Chinese University of Hong Kong (Map)
AbstractRandom walk is a fundamental concept in probability theory. This theoretical concept turns out to have an influential application: it underpins the PageRank algorithm that Google uses to measure webpages' importance. We will explain this connection and introduce the underlying spectral graph theory. We will also mention related challenges in theoretical computer science.

2. Guest Lecture on 5 August 2015
TopicFun with spheres
SpeakerDr. FOK Chi-Kwong
National Center for Theoretical Sciences, National Taiwan University
Date5 August 2015 (Wed)
Time2:30pm - 4:00pm
VenueLT1, Lady Shaw Building (LSB), The Chinese University of Hong Kong (Map)
AbstractAmong all closed and bounded surfaces, spheres are the simplest, yet the most symmetrical and occur most frequently in the nature. Since the time of Archimedes, they have been objects of great interest in mathematics. In this talk, we will take a stroll through some fascinating properties of spheres and use them as toy models to get a taste of some far-reaching theories in topology.

All are welcome. No registration and payment is required. First come first served.

In 2014 summer, we held a guest talk in Ricci Flow and Wallach Space. Many students enjoyed the talks and raised further mathematics questions.
